Graphic Design in Use

Graphic design – in contrast to product design or interaction design – does not often deal with use, but as its other name suggests with visual communication. It is preoccupied with the visual. When use is considered this is often done at task level with legibility and handling in mind. However, if we want to explore graphic design and its use in everyday life we need to broaden the context of inquiry. We need to look at peoples’ actions and how graphic design takes part in them, and this leads us towards theories of action.

Everyday Design in Learning Activities

My studies focused on self-regulated learning activities of students in the humanities. I have conducted a series of interviews, observations in student’s homes and surveys to obtain thick material about their learning practice. I have examined student’s workplaces, the different activities they perform, the different documents they produce etc. The material was analyzed in the style of Grounded Theory.
